BLACK CROWS

Something I would have loved to include in True Confections had I known it before now:

You know Black Crows, those licorice gum drops you see for sale at movie theater candy counters if nowhere else?
Apparently the original intention was to call them Black Rose, but the person charged with designing and ordering the cardboard box misunderstood the request.

  1. I have never seen or heard of these candies. Where did you hear this origin story? Because I can't help feeling it sounds unlikely.

  2. They're right next to the Dots! It's all over the place in candy blogs and candy history books. I agree, it's a little too good to be true, but I don't need to find out for sure.

  3. This makes me think about site-specific candy: things that you don't see except (say) at the movie theater, or that, if you did see it elsewhere, it would never occur to you to eat. For me, Chuckles, those flat gumdrops, are associated solely with childhood visits to the skating rink. My movie (and sometimes theater) candy, a little later in life, was Junior Mints. If these even exist outside those realms, I am unconscious of it.

  4. A chat with a woman perusing the candy aisle at the supermarket has changed my sense of Chuckles (which I always thought were real Halloween loot duds), because she told me she was looking for them because her father both craves them and thinks of them as "the taste of Vietnam." Apparently they were popular among troops there because they are stable in the heat, unlike most other candy.
